You entered your tracking number and got "tracking number not found," "invalid tracking number," or just a blank result. It's frustrating — especially when you're anxious about an important delivery.
The good news: a non-working tracking number doesn't usually mean the package is lost. In the vast majority of cases, there's a simple explanation, and the tracking will start working within hours or a day.
Here's every reason a tracking number might not work, how to diagnose the issue, and what to do.
What It Means
A non-working tracking number means the carrier's tracking system can't find a record matching the number you entered. This can happen for several distinct reasons:
Category 1: Package not yet in the carrier's system
- Label created but package not yet scanned by carrier
- Retailer generated tracking before handing to carrier
- Package still at the retailer's warehouse
Category 2: Tracking number is wrong
- Typo in the number
- Using the wrong carrier's website
- Order number confused with tracking number
Category 3: Carrier system lag
- First scan happened but tracking hasn't updated yet
- Regional delay in syncing tracking data
Category 4: Package routing issues
- Address problem prevented first scan — see our articles on address issues and address corrections
- Package being processed manually
Category 5: Fraudulent or invalid shipping
- The shipper never actually shipped (scam or out-of-stock issue)
- Tracking number was recycled from an old shipment
- Label was created but purchase was cancelled
Why It Happens
The most common causes in order of likelihood:
1. The package hasn't been scanned yet (most common) Carriers only create a tracking record when the package is physically scanned at their facility. A label can be created hours or even days before the package is handed to the carrier. Until that first scan, tracking shows nothing.
This is especially common with:
- Online retailers that print labels in bulk before shipping
- Warehouse backlogs during peak seasons
- International shipments not yet departed
See our dedicated guide on how long before a tracking number becomes active for specific timelines.
2. You're on the wrong carrier's website USPS tracking numbers look different from UPS ones (UPS starts with 1Z). Entering a USPS number on UPS.com returns nothing. Check your order confirmation for which carrier was used.
USPS format examples: 9400 1111 2222 3333 4444 55 or EE 123 456 789 US UPS format: 1Z followed by 16 characters FedEx format: 12–22 digit number, often 12, 15, or 20 digits DHL format: 10-digit number
3. Typo in the tracking number One wrong digit or letter makes the number completely invalid. Copy-paste from your order confirmation email instead of typing manually.
4. Tracking lag after first scan Even after the package is scanned, tracking data can take 2–8 hours to propagate to the public-facing tracking page. Wait a few hours and try again.
5. International shipment handoff For international orders, the package may have a sender-country tracking number until it arrives in the US and gets a new domestic number assigned. Check whether the retailer sent two tracking numbers.
6. Retailer hasn't shipped yet Some retailers generate tracking numbers when payment is processed — before the package is picked and packed. If your number doesn't work within 24 hours of the "shipped" email, the package may not have left the warehouse yet.
How Long It Lasts
How long a tracking number typically takes to activate:
| Carrier | Typical activation time after first scan | |---|---| | USPS | 2–24 hours | | UPS | 1–8 hours | | FedEx | 1–4 hours | | DHL | 2–12 hours |
If label was just created (no scan yet):
- Could be 1–5 days before first scan, depending on retailer shipping speed
- International packages: 1–7 days before first visible tracking event
Full details on tracking activation timelines are in our guide on how long before a tracking number becomes active.
When tracking never becomes active (red flag):
- More than 7 days after "shipped" email with no tracking activity
- Retailer can't confirm the package was actually sent
- This may indicate a fulfillment issue or, in rare cases, fraud
Should You Be Concerned?
Not immediately — wait 24–48 hours first.
Don't worry if:
- You just received the "shipped" email within the last 24 hours
- It's a busy shipping period (holidays, sale events)
- You're on the correct carrier's website
Start to be concerned if:
- 48+ hours and still no tracking activity
- 5+ days and no activity for a domestic shipment
- The retailer's support team can't confirm the package shipped
- The tracking number format doesn't match any known carrier format
What You Can Do
Step 1: Check you're using the right carrier
- Look at your order confirmation for the carrier name
- Try USPS.com, UPS.com, FedEx.com, and DHL.com with the same number
- Also try third-party trackers like 17track.net which check multiple carriers simultaneously
Step 2: Copy-paste the tracking number
- Open your order confirmation email
- Copy the tracking number exactly (don't type it manually)
- Paste it directly into the tracking field
- Avoid copying spaces before or after the number
Step 3: Wait and try again
- If you just received the shipping notification: wait 24 hours
- Try again the next morning — tracking databases update overnight
- Check both the carrier's website AND a third-party tracker
Step 4: Contact the retailer (after 48 hours with no activity)
- Share the tracking number with them
- Ask when the package was physically handed to the carrier
- Ask if there's a secondary tracking number (for international, this is common)
- Ask for proof of shipment (carrier receipt or scan confirmation)
Step 5: Contact the carrier directly
Call and give them the tracking number:
- USPS: 1-800-275-8777
- UPS: 1-800-742-5877
- FedEx: 1-800-463-3339
- DHL: 1-800-225-5345
They may be able to locate the package by sender address or other information if the number itself isn't in the system yet.
Step 6: If 7+ days and still nothing
This is when to escalate:
- Ask the retailer to open a trace investigation
- Consider disputing the charge with your credit card if the retailer is unresponsive
- File a USPS missing mail search if USPS is the carrier
When to Contact the Carrier
Contact the carrier if:
- 48+ hours have passed since the shipping notification and no tracking appears
- You're getting "invalid tracking number" rather than just no updates
- You confirmed the carrier is correct and number is entered correctly
Carrier contacts:
- USPS: 1-800-275-8777
- UPS: 1-800-742-5877
- FedEx: 1-800-463-3339
- DHL: 1-800-225-5345
