UPS "Billing Information Received" — What It Means & Is Your Package Moving?

If your UPS tracking shows "Billing Information Received," it means the sender has created a UPS  shipping label and the billing/shipment details have been transmitted to UPS's system — but UPS has not yet physically picked up or received the package. In other words, the label exists and UPS knows about the shipment, but the package hasn't entered UPS's network yet.

Ship Packages

This is one of the earliest possible tracking statuses, and it's important to understand: at this stage, your package has not yet shipped. The sender still needs to hand the package to a UPS driver for pickup or drop it off at a UPS location before transit begins.

Here's exactly what this status means, how long it typically lasts, and when to be concerned.

What It Means

"Billing Information Received" is a UPS pre-shipment status that appears when a shipper creates a UPS label and transmits the shipment data to UPS electronically — before the physical package is handed over to UPS.

What has happened at this point:

  • The seller/shipper has created a UPS shipping label
  • UPS has received the electronic shipment record (billing info, weight, dimensions, service type, destination)
  • A tracking number has been generated and is now active in UPS's system
  • The package has NOT been picked up or scanned by UPS yet

What has NOT happened yet:

  • UPS has not physically received the package
  • The package is not in transit
  • No pickup scan has occurred

This is different from:

  • "Origin Scan" — that means UPS has physically scanned and received the package
  • "Picked Up" — that means a UPS driver has collected the package from the sender
  • "In Transit" — that means the package is actively moving in UPS's network

"Billing Information Received" can persist for hours or days if the seller hasn't yet handed off the physical package to UPS.

Why It Happens

1. The seller printed a label in advance Many online retailers and sellers create shipping labels before they've actually packed or handed off the package. This is common practice — labels are sometimes generated at the time of order, even if fulfillment takes 1–3 business days.

2. Pre-scheduled pickup The sender may have scheduled a UPS pickup for a specific date/time. The label and billing info are transmitted in advance, but the package stays with the sender until the driver arrives.

3. The package is awaiting drop-off The sender may plan to drop the package at a UPS Store, UPS drop box, or UPS Customer Center rather than scheduling a pickup. Until they physically do that, tracking stays at "Billing Information Received."

4. High-volume shippers Large retailers and fulfillment centers often batch-print labels for thousands of orders at once. Some packages may be labeled and logged in UPS's system hours or a full day before being physically picked up during the next scheduled UPS collection.

5. Delay at the sender's end Sometimes the label is created but the package is delayed in being packed, fulfilled, or handed off — due to stock issues, fulfillment center backlogs, or weekends/holidays.

How Long It Lasts

"Billing Information Received" typically lasts between a few hours and 3 business days before the sender hands the package to UPS and an Origin Scan appears.

Typical scenarios:

  • Same day: Seller prints label and hands off to UPS the same day — tracking updates to "Picked Up" or "Origin Scan" within hours
  • 1–2 business days: Seller has 1–2 day processing/fulfillment time — normal for many online retailers
  • Weekend: If the label is created on a Friday and the pickup/drop-off isn't until Monday, tracking will show "Billing Information Received" all weekend

When to start questioning it: If "Billing Information Received" persists for more than 5 business days without progressing to an Origin Scan or Picked Up event, it's worth contacting the sender to confirm the package was actually handed to UPS.

Should You Be Concerned?

No — for the first 1–3 business days, this is completely normal. Most sellers have a processing period before handing packages to carriers.

Completely normal:

  • Seeing this status for 1–3 business days after placing an order
  • No movement over a weekend (UPS doesn't always pick up on Saturdays; no Sunday pickups)
  • The tracking page showing an estimated delivery date but no movement yet

Start paying attention if:

  • It's been 5+ business days since the order and the status hasn't changed
  • The estimated delivery date is approaching or has passed and tracking is still pre-shipment
  • The seller confirmed the package shipped but it's been days with no Origin Scan

Important distinction: Some sellers mark orders as "shipped" when they print the label, not when the package is actually handed to UPS. If your order confirmation says "shipped" but tracking still shows "Billing Information Received" after several days, the package may not have actually left the seller yet.

What You Can Do

1. Check the seller's processing time Review the order confirmation or the seller's stated processing/handling time. Many retailers have 1–3 business day processing times before packages ship. If you're within that window, wait.

2. Wait for the Origin Scan The status will update to "Origin Scan" or "Picked Up" once UPS physically receives the package. This is the first sign the package is actually in transit.

3. Contact the seller if it's been 5+ business days If "Billing Information Received" persists beyond the seller's stated handling time, contact them to confirm the package was actually handed to UPS. Ask for confirmation that a pickup occurred or that they dropped it off.

4. Don't contact UPS yet UPS only has electronic data at this stage — no physical package. UPS customer service cannot provide additional information until the package is physically in their network (Origin Scan or later). Contact the seller first.

5. Contact UPS as a last resort If the seller confirms the package was handed to UPS but tracking still shows "Billing Information Received" after 7+ days, call UPS at 1-800-742-5877. Provide the tracking number and the date the seller handed it over — UPS can investigate whether a scan was missed.

When to Contact the Carrier

Contact the seller first (not UPS) if:

  • It's been 5+ business days with no progress beyond "Billing Information Received"
  • Your estimated delivery date is approaching with no movement
  • The seller says they shipped but tracking hasn't updated

Contact UPS only after the seller confirms they handed the package over:
