FedEx "Indirect Signature Required" — What It Means & What to Do

If your FedEx tracking or delivery notice shows "Indirect Signature Required," it means your package cannot simply be left at the door — someone must sign for it upon delivery. However, unlike stricter signature options, an indirect signature allows for some flexibility: a neighbor, building manager, or another person at a nearby address can sign on your behalf.

This is the most flexible of FedEx's three signature options and is commonly used for moderately valuable shipments where the sender wants confirmation of receipt without requiring the recipient to be personally present. If no one is available to sign, FedEx will leave a door tag and reattempt delivery.

Here's exactly what indirect signature means, who can sign, and how to make sure your package gets delivered on the first attempt.

What It Means

"Indirect Signature Required" is a FedEx delivery service option that requires a signature from a person at or near the delivery address before the package can be released. It is the least restrictive of FedEx's three signature service levels:

Language Resources

FedEx Signature Service Levels (least to most restrictive):

| Level | Who Can Sign | |---|---| | Indirect Signature Required | Recipient, neighbor, or building manager | | Direct Signature Required | Only someone at the delivery address | | Adult Signature Required | Only an adult (18+) at the delivery address with valid ID |

For Indirect Signature specifically, FedEx can:

  • Obtain a signature from someone at the delivery address
  • Obtain a signature from a neighbor at an adjacent address
  • Leave the package at the management office of a building or apartment complex (with a signature from staff)
  • Leave the package without a signature if the recipient has a pre-signed FedEx door tag or a signed release on file

The driver cannot:

  • Leave the package at an unattended door without any signature
  • Leave the package at a location with no one to sign

This service is set by the sender at the time of shipment — the recipient cannot remove the signature requirement without sender authorization (though the sender may grant this option through FedEx Delivery Manager).

Why It Happens

The sender chose Indirect Signature Required when creating the shipment. This is typically done for:

1. Moderately valuable items For packages worth a few hundred dollars, senders want proof of delivery without the stricter personal-presence requirement of Direct or Adult Signature. Electronics, clothing orders, and consumer goods often fall into this category.

Food & Grocery Delivery

2. Insurance or liability requirements Some  shipping insurance policies require a signature to validate a successful delivery claim. Senders who've had past issues with lost packages or porch piracy may add signature requirements as a precaution.

3. Regulatory or legal requirements Certain categories of goods (alcohol in some states, regulated health products, etc.) legally require delivery confirmation signatures.

4. Shipper policy Many retailers and e-commerce merchants apply indirect signature requirements automatically above a certain order value threshold as a standard policy.

5. FedEx default for certain service levels Some FedEx service tiers include signature requirements by default, particularly for overnight and international services above certain declared values.

How Long It Lasts

Indirect Signature Required is a delivery condition, not a delay. It doesn't add time to your delivery — it simply means the driver needs a signature before handing over the package.

If someone is available to sign: Delivery happens normally on the scheduled delivery day.

If no one is available:

  • The driver leaves a door tag and takes the package back to the local FedEx station
  • FedEx will reattempt delivery the next business day (up to 3 total attempts)
  • After 3 failed attempts, the package is typically held at a FedEx location for 5–7 days before being returned to the sender

Using Delivery Manager to avoid missed delivery: If you know you won't be home, act before the delivery attempt. You can often use FedEx Delivery Manager to:

  • Authorize a signature release (if the sender allows it)
  • Redirect to a FedEx pickup location
  • Reschedule for a day you'll be home
  • Provide a signed door tag for a specific location

Should You Be Concerned?

No — this is a routine delivery requirement, not an issue with your package. Your shipment is fine; it just requires a signature before the driver can release it.

Plan ahead if:

  • You work during delivery hours and won't be home
  • You live alone with no neighbors or building staff who could sign
  • You have time-sensitive contents and can't afford a missed delivery + reattempt delay

You do not need to worry if:

  • You or someone else will be home during the delivery window
  • You live in an apartment or building with a management office (they can typically sign on your behalf)
  • You've already authorized a signature release via FedEx Delivery Manager (if the sender permits this)

Note: Even if you leave a note on your door, the driver cannot legally accept an unwitnessed signature substitution. The signing must happen in person or through an approved FedEx mechanism.

What You Can Do

Step 1: Check if you can sign in person Use FedEx Delivery Manager to get a delivery window estimate on the morning of delivery. If possible, arrange to be home during that window.

Step 2: Ask a neighbor or building staff For Indirect Signature, a trusted neighbor at an adjacent address or your building's management office can sign on your behalf. The package will be left with them.

Step 3: Authorize a signature release (if sender allows) In FedEx Delivery Manager, check whether a "Leave at Door" or signature release option is available. This is only possible if the sender has granted this permission. If available, you can electronically authorize FedEx to leave the package without an in-person signature.

Step 4: Redirect to a FedEx pickup location If you can't be home and no one can sign, redirect your package to a nearby FedEx Office, Walgreens, or other FedEx pickup location using Delivery Manager. You'll pick it up at your convenience with a valid ID.

Step 5: Use a signed door tag If you receive a door tag after a missed delivery, you can sign the back of the tag and leave it in a visible spot at your door. For Indirect Signature (but NOT Direct or Adult Signature), FedEx may accept this on a subsequent attempt — check the door tag instructions carefully.

Step 6: Schedule a pickup at the FedEx facility After a missed delivery, you can pick up the package directly from the local FedEx station, often the same day or next morning, with a valid ID.

When to Contact the Carrier

Contact FedEx if:

  • You've missed two delivery attempts and need to make arrangements before the third
  • You want to redirect to a pickup location but can't do it through Delivery Manager
  • You need to confirm whether the sender has granted a signature release option
  • The package is being returned to sender after failed attempts and you want to intercept it
