How Long Does UPS 2nd Day Air Take?

UPS 2nd Day Air is UPS's guaranteed second-business-day air service for packages up to 150 pounds, and it delivers in 2  business days within the contiguous United States. It travels by air, so it's much faster than UPS Ground (1–5 days) but slower and cheaper than UPS Next Day Air (overnight).

2nd Day Air guarantees delivery by the end of the second business day, with an optional 2nd Day Air A.M. tier for morning (by noon) delivery. Unlike UPS Ground, the service includes a money-back guarantee on the published delivery time, so when UPS misses it you may be eligible for a refund.

If your tracking shows "In Transit" between air hubs, your package is moving by air. The 2-business-day commitment is guaranteed for most U.S. addresses, with separate arrangements for Alaska, Hawaii, and international destinations.

What It Means

What UPS 2nd Day Air Is

UPS 2nd Day Air handles time-definite delivery for packages up to 150 pounds via UPS's air network. It comes in two tiers:

  • 2nd Day Air: end of second business day
  • 2nd Day Air A.M.: by 12:00 PM (noon) on the second business day

For faster overnight delivery choose UPS Next Day Air; for cheaper non-guaranteed transit, see UPS Ground or the economy UPS SurePost option.

Standard Delivery Time

The published standard is 2 business days within the contiguous 48 states. Alaska, Hawaii, and international destinations vary, and 2nd Day Air may not be available to all addresses.

Why It Happens

Why 2nd Day Air Times Vary

  • Service tier chosen — A.M. delivers by noon; standard by end of day.
  • Air network disruptions — weather and air-traffic delays extend transit; see UPS shipment delayed.
  • Hub sorting delays — packages pass through air hubs; an exception extends transit.
  • Address issues — incomplete address delivery is a top exception cause.
  • Peak season — air capacity tightens in November–December and commits can slip by a day.

How Long It Lasts

Typical Time Range

  • Contiguous 48: 2 business days (standard by end of day; A.M. by noon)
  • Alaska/Hawaii: varies, often 2–3 business days
  • International: not a standard 2nd Day Air lane; use a UPS international service

If tracking shows loaded on delivery vehicle, expect delivery that day. A package sitting at a secure facility pending a signature will deliver once the hold is resolved.

Should You Be Concerned?

Should You Be Concerned?

2nd Day Air is guaranteed, so a one-day miss matters — but it's usually resolvable via the refund. Be concerned if the second business day has passed with no delivery, or you see an exception or a package at a secure facility pending action.

Address problems are a frequent exception cause — see our incomplete address delivery guide — and a package marked delivered but not received needs immediate attention, including checking neighbors as covered in our misdelivered packages guide.

What You Can Do

What You Can Do

  • Pick the right tier — if end-of-day works, standard 2nd Day Air is cheaper than A.M.
  • Confirm the address to avoid incomplete address exceptions.
  • Ship by the daily cutoff — missing the cutoff pushes the commit by a day.
  • Hold for pickup if you won't be home — see receiver requested hold for pickup.
  • Use correct packaging to prevent unreadable label delays.
  • Ship early in the week to avoid weekend gaps — see weekend delivery.
