UPS "Rescheduled Delivery" — What It Means & What to Do

If your UPS tracking shows "Rescheduled Delivery," your package is not being delivered on the original date — UPS has moved it to a new delivery date. The package is still in the UPS network and hasn't been lost or returned, but something caused a delay that pushed delivery back.

This is one of the more frustrating UPS statuses because it can appear without a detailed explanation. Understanding the most common causes helps you know whether this is a routine delay or something that needs your attention.

Mail & Package Delivery

Here's exactly what "Rescheduled Delivery" means, why it happens, and what you can do to resolve it.

What It Means

"Rescheduled Delivery" means UPS has determined that your package cannot be delivered on the originally scheduled date and has assigned a new delivery date. The package remains in the UPS network.

Key things this status tells you:

  • Your original delivery date has changed
  • UPS has a new estimated delivery date (check your tracking for the updated date)
  • The package is not lost or returned — it's still en route
  • No action may be required from you, depending on the cause

How this differs from similar statuses:

| Status | What it means | |---|---| | Rescheduled Delivery | New delivery date assigned by UPS | | Delivery Attempt Failed | Driver tried, no one home — retry the next day | | Package at Secure Facility | Package held, action likely required | | Out for Delivery | Delivery happening today |

The new estimated date will appear in your tracking details on tracking.ups.com.

Why It Happens

Rescheduled Delivery can be triggered by a wide range of causes — many of them entirely outside your control:

Food & Grocery Delivery

1. Weather or natural events Severe weather — storms, flooding, snowfall — is the most common cause of widespread rescheduled deliveries across entire regions.

2. High package volume During peak seasons (Black Friday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Amazon Prime Day), UPS can be overwhelmed with volume, pushing some deliveries to the following day.

3. Operational or  transportation delays A delayed flight, mechanical issue with a vehicle, or facility disruption can push deliveries back a day.

4. Delivery attempt issues If a driver couldn't access your address — gated community, no access code, unsafe conditions — the delivery may be rescheduled rather than left as a standard delivery attempt.

5. Address corrections needed If there's an issue with the delivery address (see UPS Street Number is Incorrect), UPS may reschedule while the address is verified or corrected.

6. Customs or regulatory delay (international) For international shipments, customs clearance issues can push delivery dates. Review our UPS Import Scan guide for more context.

7. Recipient or shipper request You or the shipper may have previously requested a delivery hold or reschedule through UPS My Choice.

How Long It Lasts

The new delivery date is typically 1–3 business days after the original date:

  • Weather delays: Usually 1–2 days once conditions improve
  • Volume-related delays: Usually next business day
  • Access or address issues: 1–3 days depending on resolution speed
  • Customs delays: Variable — can be 2–7+ business days

Check your tracking page for the updated delivery date. UPS almost always provides a new estimated date alongside the rescheduled status. If no new date is showing, that usually means UPS is still determining when they can attempt delivery.

For ongoing tracking updates, set up notifications through UPS My Choice so you're automatically informed when delivery is rescheduled or confirmed.

Should You Be Concerned?

Usually not — most rescheduled deliveries resolve within 1–2 business days.

This is typically routine if:

  • There's been recent severe weather in your area
  • It's during a peak  shipping season
  • The new estimated delivery date is within 1–3 days

Pay closer attention if:

  • The tracking shows multiple rescheduled delivery events
  • No new delivery date is provided
  • The package has also shown a UPS delivery exception or package at secure facility status
  • Your delivery is time-sensitive (medical supplies, event, perishable)

Multiple reschedules can indicate a recurring address issue, a damaged label, or a systemic problem with the shipment. If the delivery has been rescheduled more than twice, contact UPS directly.
