DHL "Shipment Data Received" — What It Means

If your DHL tracking shows "Shipment Data Received," DHL's system has received the electronic  shipping information from the sender — but the physical package hasn't been picked up or scanned into the DHL network yet. The label has been created, but the parcel hasn't started moving.

This is the very first stage of DHL tracking, and it's completely normal. It simply means the shipper has prepared the shipment on their end. You'll need to wait for the package to actually be collected by DHL before further tracking updates appear.

Track Parcels

Here's what this status means, how long it typically lasts, and when to start worrying if tracking doesn't update.

What It Means

"Shipment Data Received" means the sender has created a DHL shipping label and electronically transmitted the shipment data to DHL's system. DHL knows the package is coming — but hasn't physically received it yet.

What this status tells you:

  • A DHL label has been generated by the shipper
  • DHL's system has the tracking number, sender, recipient, and service details
  • The package has not been picked up or scanned by DHL
  • No physical movement has occurred yet

How this fits into the DHL tracking sequence:

| Status | What it means | |---|---| | Shipment Data Received | Label created, package not yet with DHL | | Shipment Picked Up | DHL collected the package from the sender | | Processed at Transit Facility | Package at a DHL sorting hub | | Departed Facility | Package left the hub | | With Delivery Courier | Package out for delivery |

This is equivalent to USPS's " Shipping Label Created" or UPS's "Label Created" status — the parcel is in the sender's hands, not yet DHL's.

Why It Happens

This status is generated automatically as soon as the shipper creates a DHL shipping label through DHL's online platform, API, or third-party shipping software. It appears because:

Track Parcels

1. The shipper generated the label in advance Many businesses create shipping labels hours or even days before they hand the package to DHL. The label — and therefore the tracking number — exists before the package is physically ready to ship.

2. The shipper uses batch label creation High-volume shippers often generate labels for multiple orders simultaneously, sometimes before the orders have been packed. This creates a gap between label creation and actual pickup.

3. DHL pickup is scheduled for later The shipper may have a scheduled DHL pickup for a specific time (e.g., end of business day). Until the driver arrives and scans the package, it remains at "Shipment Data Received."

4. The package was dropped off but not yet scanned If the shipper dropped the package at a DHL ServicePoint but it hasn't been scanned into the system yet, the status may remain at "Shipment Data Received" for a short time.

How Long It Lasts

This status typically lasts a few hours to 1–2 business days — the time between label creation and the first DHL scan.

Track Parcels

Typical progression timelines:

  • Same-day shippers: Label created in the morning, picked up same afternoon — status updates within hours
  • Next-day shippers: Label created one day, pickup the following business day — up to 24 hours
  • Weekend label creation: If the label was created Friday evening, pickup may not happen until Monday — status may not update until then

When to be concerned: If "Shipment Data Received" remains unchanged for more than 3 business days after the expected dispatch date, it's worth contacting the shipper. The package may not have been handed to DHL yet, or there could be a delay on the sender's end.

Note: Tracking numbers are sometimes shared with recipients before the package is ready. If you received the tracking number very soon after placing an order, a delay of 1–2 days at this status is completely normal.

Should You Be Concerned?

No — this is the very first tracking stage and is completely routine. Seeing "Shipment Data Received" simply means the process has started on the shipper's end.

Completely normal:

  • The status remaining here for 1–2 business days
  • Receiving the tracking number while the status still shows "Shipment Data Received"
  • No tracking movement over a weekend if the label was created on Friday

Worth following up if:

  • The status hasn't changed for more than 3 business days past the expected dispatch date
  • The shipper confirmed the package was sent but tracking still shows only "Shipment Data Received" after 3+ days
  • Your order confirmation shows a dispatch date that has passed by several days

If this persists: Contact the shipper first — not DHL. At this stage, the package may still be with the sender and DHL won't have information beyond what's already in the tracking system.

What You Can Do

In most cases: simply wait. The package will be scanned into DHL's network when picked up or dropped off, and tracking will start updating automatically.

1. Check your order confirmation Verify the expected dispatch date. If the dispatch date is today or tomorrow, "Shipment Data Received" is exactly what you should see.

2. Set up DHL tracking notifications Sign up for free email or SMS alerts at DHL's tracking page so you're automatically notified when the package is picked up and tracking begins.

3. If 3+ business days have passed — contact the shipper Reach out to the retailer or sender and ask:

  • Has the package been handed to DHL?
  • Was there a dispatch delay?
  • Can they confirm the tracking number is correct?

4. If the shipper confirms dispatch but tracking is still static Contact DHL with the tracking number:

  • DHL Express: 1-800-225-5345
  • DHL eCommerce: 1-800-805-9306
  • Online: dhl.com/contact

When to Contact the Carrier

Contact the shipper first if the status hasn't updated after 3 business days. Contact DHL only if the shipper confirms the package was handed over but tracking still shows no movement.
